Location Name:
TS813 - A156 Lea Road, Gainsborough

Location Notes:
The location is on the outskirts of Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. The nearest city is Lincoln.
The location is on an over bridge which crosses the Gainsborough to Lincoln railway line from a farm track on the main A156 road to Lea.

Railway type and traffic
The railway is double track and sees both passenger (Central Trains Lincoln to Doncaster and Northern Trains Sheffield to Lincoln services)
Staple freight flows include Selby to Felixstowe intermodal (GBRf) fly ash from West Burton Power Station (DB) coal from Immingham (DB) ballast from Mountsorrel to Doncaster (Freightliner) scrap metal from Lincoln to Healey Mills (DB) and gypsum from West Burton Power Station to Hotchley Hill (GBRf).
However, please bear in mind that most freight trains travel via Gainsborough Central on Saturdays.

TS1061 - Ashwell, Rutland

Location Notes:
A quite location on the out skirts of Ashwell village, in the tiny county of Rutland. The line here runs between Peterborough and Leicester or Loughborough, depending on the route at Syston.
The crossing is a remote crossing where the barriers remain down, unless someone presses the 'Asking Plunger' to notify the signalman to raise the barriers.

Railway type and traffic
The usual traffic is Cross Country 170s between Birmingham and Stansted.
Freight traffic is mostly class 66s and 70s on aggregate and intermodals. There are occasional 60s but these are rare.
It is also common to find Serco test trains running from Derby to the east of England which can produce 37s, 31s or 67s or even 68s on occasion.

TS836 - Bainton

Location Notes:
Bainton is a quiet village located between Stamford and Market Deeping, and lies to the north west of Peterborough. The line here links Nottingham and Leicester with Peterborough.

Railway type and traffic
Passenger traffic is mainly central 170 units. But the line also sees some freight action.

TS324 - Barkston

Location Notes:
Located on the East Coast Main Line 4.5 miles north of Grantham and 1.25 miles south of Frinkley Lane crossing. The site was formerly the Barkston station (closed to passengers on 16 March 1955). Nothing remains of the station except the former station house.

Railway type and traffic
DB Schenker, GBRf freight and passenger trains by East Coast and Hull Trains as well as Central Trains services to/from Boston and Skegness. Barkston South junction is visible from the location. Also, in the opposite direction about a quarter of a mile away, can be seen the Grantham avoiding line.

TS830 - Cleethorpes Footbridge

Location Notes:
The location is on a footbridge over the single line from Grimsby Town station, a few hundred metres from Cleethorpes station in North Lincolnshire.
On one side of the line is the Humber Estuary and on the other a housing estate with Blundell Park, home of Grimsby Town F.C. also visible.
The nearest city is Lincoln with Grimsby only a few miles away.

Railway type and traffic
The line sees First Trans Pennine passenger services from Cleethorpes to Manchester and also Northern Trains services to Barton-on-Humber and a Saturday only service to Sheffield (via Brigg).
There are no freight services, but locomotive hauled specials are not uncommon particularly in the summer months.

TS521 - Grantham Station

Location Notes:
On the East Coast Main Line - Grantham is a fairly busy, and popular changeover station between local Central Trains services and GNER Intercity services.

Railway type and traffic
A good mix of passing trains worked by both HST and Class 91s, operated by NXEC, quite a few of which stop here. East Midlands Trains usually run Class 158s on the Liverpool to Norwich trains, as well as Class 153/156/158 on Skegness trains. Hull Trains operate Class 180 'Adelante' units, all of which call here and Grand Central's HST/180 workings pass through.
There are various intermodal trains, and tanker trains use the adjacent, next to Platform 4, sidings to run-round the loco (usually a Class 60).

TS829 - Lolham Bridges

Location Notes:
The foot crossing has been closed (April 2013), it is not know if it will reopen.


Lolham Bridges is just to the north west of Peterborough. The busy East Coast Main Line runs through here.

Railway type and traffic
Regular East Coast and Hull trains pass the location, as well as local DMU services. There are some freight workings.

TS984 - Marholm

Location Notes:
Located on the site of a former level crossing (now closed) just North of Werrington Junction, Peterborough. It is on the main ECML running between Peterborough and Grantham, plus the Peterborough to Stamford line. The Peterborough to Spalding line can also be seen from the footbridge.

Railway type and traffic
Passenger traffic consists mainly of East Coast operated 91s and HSTs for East Coast services.
Other operators workings include Grand Central HSTs and 180s.
First Hull Trains runn 180's on their services.
EMT trains on the Spalding branch are worked mainly by 153s, with 156s and 158s on busier workings.
EMT Norwich - Liverpool services are worked by 158s - very occasionally 156s.
Arriva Cross Country Birmingham - Stanstead Airport services are worked by 170s.
The NMT makes regular runs between Heaton and Bounds Green(usually Mondays)and there are regular Serco trips between Derby and East Anglia(37s and 31s), and the line is very popular with charter trains(47s, 90s and 67s)on Saturdays in particular.

Freightliner 66s work modal and aggregates only.
99% of DB Schenker workings are 66 hauled. Best chance of getting a class 60 is on the Ely - Peak Forest working, followed by occasional trips out to the Anglia region on aggregate workings from Mountsorrel or engineers trips from Toton - usually after overhaul or reinstatement.
There is 1 daylight (March - October)class 92 working (Dollands Moor - Scunthorpe) viewable in the late evening.

TS34 - Marston, Frinkley Lane Crossing

Location Notes:
A foot crossing about 3 miles north of Grantham on the East Coast Main Line.

Railway type and traffic
A busy two track section of the East Coast Main Line. Passenger traffic is mainly Virgin East Coast class 91s and HSTs, with workings from First Hull Trains 180s, and Grand Central 180s/HSTs.
There is quite a bit of freight traffic including DB Schenker, Freightliner and GBRf 66s, the occasional 92 or 60.

TS821 - Rolleston Crossing

Location Notes:
This location is on a farm track level crossing, and public footpath, just outside the village of Rolleston on the road to Steythorpe. It is around three miles from Southwell, and eight miles from Newark-on-Trent.
The location is on the Nottingham to Lincoln line, which is double track controlled by semaphore signalling.
The nearest city is Nottingham around 16 miles away.

Railway type and traffic
Passenger services are provided by East Midlands Trains (Leicester / Notingham to Lincoln).
Freight services are operated by DB Schenker, Freightliner Heavyhaul, and GBRf and are predominantly oil and coal traffic from Immingham.

TS630 - Skegness Station

Location Notes:
Located at the end of the 'Poacher Line', the nickname given to the Grantham - Skegness branch. Skegness is a major holiday resort, though sadly, the station is currently a bit of a dereliction. Skegness is where Billy Butlin opened his first holiday camp, in 1936. The camp, still in existence, is somewhat remodelled from years gone by.
2006 marked both the 70th anniversary of the opening of the first Butlins holiday camp, and the 125th anniversary of Skegness pier.

Railway type and traffic
All train services are provided by central Trains, and will usually be a class 156, 158, or 170. On summer Saturdays, units work in multiple, and it is not uncommon to see two single car 153s sandwiching a 156 or 158. No loco hauled trains run, due to a Network Rail ban on loco hauled workings (2005) and, consequently, there is no freight either.

TS1089 - Stoke Bank, Swayfield Bridge

Location Notes:
Located about 5 miles from the A1 / A151 junction at Colsterworth, this location is a peaceful village on the East Coast Main Line at the top end of the famous Stoke Bank.
Nearest Cities are Grantham (about 11 miles away) and Stamford (about 13 miles).

Railway type and traffic
Swayfield is on the East Coast so therefore there will be a lot of traffic on a weekday. You are likely to see are Virgin East Coast 91+MkIV sets and HSTs, Grand Central HST/180s working and Hull Trains 180s. East Midlands Trains 158s feature on an hourly service to and from Norwich and Liverpool.
Freight Traffic - you are likely to see GBRf 66s on Intermodals and engineers trains, DB Schenker 66s on Intermodals and a couple of Freightliner 66s. During the night hours freight does increase and the chance for an DB Schenker class 92 from Doncaster on a steel train is high.

TS828 - Tallington Crossings

Location Notes:
These footpath locations have been temporarily closed as of 2011 and will likely remain closed indefinitely.

Tallington village lies between Stamford and Market Deeping, just to the north west of Peterborough.

Railway type and traffic
Regular East Coast and Hull trains pass the location, as do some freight workings.

TS1008 - Tallington Level Crossing

Location Notes:
Tallington is a peaceful rural village in the middle of Lincolnshire, between Grantham and Peterborough on the East Coast Main Line.

Railway type and traffic
Tallington is on the East Coast so therefore there will be a lot of traffic on a weekday. You are likely to see are East Coast 91+MkIV sets and HSTs, A daily Grand Central HST working. East Midlands Trains 158s feature on an hourly service to and from Norwich and Liverpool.

Location Notes:

Location Notes:
This location is approximately 5 miles North of Peterborough town Centre, in the district of Werrington.
It is on the East Coast Main Line, just south of the junction for the Spalding Line.

Passenger traffic consists mainly of National Express operated 91s and HSTs for East Coast services.
Other operators workings include Grand Central HSTs, soon to be accompanied by a couple of 180s.
Hull Trains are now running 180's on their services.
