Location notes
Dorchester, an historic market town, is the county town of Dorset. The Station is on the main line from London Waterloo to Weymouth. The nearest large town is Bournemouth.
Railway type and traffic
The main trains that travel through Dorchester South are South West trains, classes 450 and 442 EMU service.
The Freightliner sand train, runs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at approximately 3.00pm. It bring in trucks, pushes them into a siding, un-couples a few and takes them into the station and will run round the train. The same operation will happen again when the train returns a couple of hours later. The 66 returns light engine.
Steam tours travel through the station every couple of months. Every 2 to 3 months a Balfour Beatty track cleaner comes down from Eastleigh and parks in the sidings for later use.
Environment
Situated next to the brewery, U-drive depot and the Station Master pub, the station is a curved where the porters have a good view from the platform 1 ticket office. The general public use the footbridge over the track as a short cut to get into town.
Road directions
The A35 from Poole, you come to the Kingston Maurward Roundabout, proceed along the Dorchester bypass to Tesco and Dorchester Football ground, turn right which is the third exit, up to the traffic lights, straight across and station is the first right past the police station.

There is a 'pay and display' car park within the Station area.
Public transport
Bus services travel to the station and taxis are always available.

Amenities
The Station is situated within walking distance from Dorchester Town Centre. There is a Market on Wednesday mornings, which is just over the road from the Station.
Accommodation
There are plenty of hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area, it is advisable to book in advance. Contact local Tourist Information Centre for more information.

Photographic notes
The place is a good area for photographers when it isn’t busy in the station. Standing at the south end of platform 1 to photography a train heading down to Weymouth. If you wanted to see a train heading north to London Waterloo you should really stand on platform 1 facing north.
