Class 60/66s are the usual suspects on the coals, steels, Oil and enterprise traffic, though Class 67s can occasionally be seen if your lucky! Location Name: TS272 - BarnetbyLocation Notes: A busy junction station near to the Humber oil refineries and iron works in Linconshire.For people interested in all night 'spotting' visits if it worth noting that the station lights are automatically switched off around 01:30. The unmanned station will then be in darkness. Prior to 2016 the location and surrounding area was controlled by signal boxes and semaphore signals. These were removed over the Christmas period of 2015 and the whole area now has colour light signals. The remaining boxes are supposed to be removed during 2016. Railway type and traffic Some units on passenger workings but the main focus of traffic is the DB Schenker and Freightliner hauled freights. Humber Oil, Scunthorpe Iron and coal traffic is predominant with at least 3 or 4 trains an hour. These trains are mostly 66 hauled but expcet a few 60s to appear. |

Location Name: TS440 - Doncaster StationLocation Notes: Situated in Doncaster town centre, the station is on the ECML and also on the Sheffield - Scunthorpe/Hull Line.Railway type and traffic A very busy station, with plenty of National Express action with both stopping and 100mph through trains which can be 91s or HSTs. There also Hull trains services from Hull to London, operated with Class 222 Pioneers, Northern Rail services from Doncaster to Leeds (Class 321s) and Sheffield - Hull / Scunthorpe (Classes 144, 142, 153, 150 156 and 158), First Transpennine express run an hourly Cleethorpes to Manchester Train, run by class 185 DMUs. Midland Mainline also run services through Doncaster, but only early morning and late at night, these are formed of HSTs. Finally there is a Central Trains Service to Lincoln via Gainsborough, usually a 153. The double tracked line is on the routes between Hull>Goole and Hull>Selby.Railway type and traffic This is a main line and traffic runs 24hrs a day. The mainstay of all the traffic are the regular FTPEx and Northern services. East Coast do have some HST services. You will likely see 142/144/150/158/185/180 and 43s.Hull has docklands so there is some freight with the usual 66s running services. There is also an Aggregate train that runs into the local Tilcon depot. Freight is not that frequent so do check before travelling if that is what you want to see. |
Location Name: TS24 - Hillam Gates Level CrossingLocation Notes: Just north of Ferrybridge and Knottingley and about 10 miles south of Colton Junction. This is off the A162. The nearest village is Monk Fryston in North Yorkshire. The line runs from Milford Junction to Castleford.Railway type and traffic The location has 4 lines in total. Most of the traffic is freight and you are likely to see the usual mix of 66s. 56s from DCR can also be seen as they run to Kellingley Colliery. The Shunter from Milford often trips crippled wagons down this line to the nearby Knottingley TMD.During summer you will also see tours being pulled by Heritage Traction units and Steam Engines from time to time. |

Location Name: TS389 - Monk FrystonLocation Notes: The road bridge at Monk Fryston overlooks the junction and sidings of South Milford, which is on the line from Castleford to Church Fenton and York, the junction being the spur connecting this with the Leeds to Selby line.Update October 2014: Since the road bridge has been rebuilt in in the early part of 2014 the once easily obtainable shots no longer exist. Part of the bridge rebuild was the provision of a separate footbridge to the north of the road bridge. This has relatively high parapets so some form of elevation is required for southbound shots. The arrangements of the new road bridge and footbridge also make fast transition from northbound to southbound shots and vice versa effectively impossible. Railway type and traffic The passenger service on this section of line consists of an infrequent York to Sheffield via Pontefract service. There is however a large range of freight services, including regular coal trains from both the sidings at South Milford and from Gascoigne Wood to the various Power Stations and also most freight from the North-East heading down through Yorkshire to the midlands, including Freightliner and Steel traffic.Despite the closure of the Selby Coalfield there is still a relatively large volume of freight traffic, mainly coal but also biomass and general freight. |

It sits on the main Doncaster to Scunthorpe line, and sees approximately 6 trains an hour in each direction.Railway type and traffic The railway is the main Doncaster to Scunthorpe line, and so a variety of traffic from Immingham in the east passes this location. Also, the majority of eastbound trains are empty coal trains from the Aire Valley Coalfield, and steel trains from the northeast to Scunthorpe. |
Location Name: TS488 - Swinton StationLocation Notes: Swinton station is a small 3 platform station located on the main North East-South West route in South Yorkshire. Here, the lines come from Sheffield/Chesterfield and diverge with one going to Leeds/York, and the other to Doncaster.There are signals at the end of each platform which remain at red until something is coming. There is a freight line visible behind some trees that avoids the station completely. Some freight to/from the Doncaster direction goes this way and misses out Swinton station. On the weekends about 2- 5 charters can stop at York making this a very busy location. |
Location Name: TS223 - York, National Railway Museum Observation PlatformLocation Notes: Situated in part of York's National Railway Museum, overlooking the city's station on the East Coast Main Line.Railway type and traffic Regular East Coast (HST and Class 91), Virgin Cross Country (Voyager), Arriva (Class 142, 144 and 156, with the occasional 158) and Transpennine Express (Class 158) services pass by the location on their way to and from the station. There may be occasional freight services, but these are rare as they use the avoiding line that runs on the other side of the museum land. Privately-owned diesel or steam traction may be used on rail tours with steam specials to Scarborough in the summer. |

There are frequent railtours (many steam-hauled) during the summer months. There is virtually no freight to speak of, apart from engineering trains during possessions. The ECML is also close by, but vegetation prevents virtually any opportunity for photography. |
