Location notes
Newport is in South Wales, about 10 minutes by train from Cardiff.
Trains leaving Cardiff Central for London, Bristol, Southern, Northern and Eastern England will pass through Newport.
Railway type and traffic
Although the station is managed by Arriva Trains Wales, the main operator through Newport is First Great Western. Arriva Trains Wales, Virgin XC and Central Trains also run services through Newport. The main passenger traffic through Newport is HSTs and class 158s. You also get 150s, 153s, 170s, 175s, 180s, Voyagers and the occasional Pacer.
Cardiff is a popular charter destination so many charter trains will pass through Newport throughout a year with vintage diesel or steam locos.
It is usually busy for freight during the day, in the evening and over night. DB Schenker 08s, 09s, 59s, 60s and 66s pass through here as do Freightliner 66s.
Environment
Newport seems like a friendly town and staff on the railway station seem to be fairly easy going. If you are coming from the main the street, through the ticket hall there are ticket gates. If you are coming off a train you can move from platform to platform no problem. From personal experience, if you explain to the staff at the ticket gates that you are an enthusiast they may let you onto the platform with out a ticket (this may not be the case all the time but it has worked for me in the past).
I have done a few all nighters on Newport station as the volume of freight does increase in the night after passenger trains stop running and this seems to be ok with station staff, but please seek permission and do not expect to be given it.
There is CCTV on the station which has 4 platforms.
Road directions
From Junction 26 or 25 of the motorway head south along the A4042 and the station is signposted from here.

Parking
There are 3 car parks near the station.
Public transport
Newport is linked by most places in England and Wales by train. If not you will need to change at Cardiff Central, Birmingham, London or Crewe.
Bus services in Newport are operated by Stagecoach and Newport Bus. National Express and Megabus services offer alternative travel into Newport from Cardiff, London and other main cities. The railway station is a 5 minute sign posted walk from Newport bus and coach station. There is a taxi rank outside the railway station and at the bus station if in doubt about how to get there.

Photographic notes
Very good location to photograph trains stabled in the yard opposite the station, and trains running through the station.
A new footbridge has been built across all four platforms at the south west end of the station. Images to follow. Aug 2011
