Location notes
Situated in the business and commercial district of Liverpool, James Street happens to be the quietest of the underground stations on the Merseyrail network. It is part of the 'Loop' Merseyrail tunnel which was bored in the late 1970s, although Platform 2 still shows signs of years before.
Railway type and traffic
Class 507s and 508s operate services to New Brighton and West Kirby at 15-minute intervals and to Chester and Ellesmere Port at 30-minute intervals.
Environment
Situated in the business area, the station does become far busier in Peak times, but off-peak, very few passengers use the Platform 3, where trains head off to New Brighton and the other Wirral destinations. Platform 1, situated separately to Platforms 2 and 3, is used by alighting passengers. The area is rather busy and hectic at all times, with many cars and buses filling the streets all day every day.
Road directions
Parking
Not recommended - parking is expensive and limited, and designated parking zones are often either full or not available. Multi-storey parking prices can be astronomical, so you are not advised to bring the car to James Street.
Public transport
Almost all bus services operating around the city centre stop on James Street or very close by. By train, from the mainline Lime Street platforms, head to the Merseyrail Wirral Line and board any train at the platform two stops to James Street.

Amenities
Toilets are not provided at the station itself, but facilities are available at nearby cafés. There are restaurants, cafés and chip shops nearby.

Photographic notes
Merseyrail DOES NOT permit the use of flash in tunnel stations, so do not do it. This disturbs the drivers and can cause distraction to other members of staff. If you can hold your camera steady, you will be fine; if not, try resting your camera on an advertising panel or just bring along a tripod.
