Location notes
Located in Surrey, near Guildford. The station is not far from the junction south of Guildford, Shalford station is on the line that branches off east towards Redhill.
Railway type and traffic
Usually just the normal passenger services (First Great Western Link services) operated by 165s. Steam specials often arrive at Shalford and stop, for approx. 40 minutes, whilst they have their tenders refilled with water from an ex fire engine. The steam specials are usually circular tours (The Downsman and VSOE luncheon excursions) from London Victoria passing Guildford and Redhill and returning to Victoria via East Croydon. The line itself is un-electrified.
Environment
There are 4 bridges that cross the railway here. 1 is the main road bridge, 2 footpath bridges (both over and accessible from the station) and a small road/bridleway bridge West of the station.
From the road/bridleway bridge you can look west towards the Junction. The line itself is on a curve to the right. You can just about see the junction through some trees. Beware - this bridge or path is not lit and does get dark! Other than that it is a quiet area.

Photographic notes
West of Shalford station (over the road the trains pass under) there is a field with a road that leads towards some accommodation and another bridge across the railway (bridge can be seen from main road bridge for identification).
From the bridge, you can look west around the curve and towards the junction (great for photographs) or east towards the station (OKish for photographs). The best position for photographing is over a small wire fence which is on the left of the bridge as you face West. The area has wonderful scenery and background. Very dark at night but plenty of sunlight during the day. The best time to take photographs in morning and early evening. Mid-dayish is OK but the sun is directly above and avoid late afternoons/evenings if possible as it will be if front of you.
As of January 2013 there are a couple of small bushes that, during the summer mightencroach on shots.
