We have just launched a new mobile version of this site -
m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
This is currently Gloucester's only station and is right on the edge of the city centre. From here you have good views of all 4 platforms and the old yard at Horton road which is coming back to life thanks to Cotswold Rail.
Railway type and traffic
FGW passenger services, HSTs, 158s, 150s, 153s, occasional Pacer.
CrossCountry 170s and ATW services also with units.
A good place to see specials for rugby matches and other events at the Millenium Stadium.
Services between Swindon/Bristol and Cheltenham/Worcester reverse here, except for the CrossCountry Voyagers which pass by on the main line.
Cotswold Rail sidings are at the station, so 43s, 47s, 57s, 31s can all be seen.
Freight is generally from the North East to South Wales steel or tanks to Westerleigh, 66s and 60s.
Environment
This is a station location and has plenty of security (although not enough in the car park judging by all the broken windscreen glass around). Platforms are all partially covered except for the area between platforms 1 and 2 and the end of platform 1.
Road directions
From the north, leave the M5 at junction 11:Go right onto the bypass. Follow the signs for Gloucester Cathedral and docks. At the first roundabout take the 2nd exit passing Virgin club on the right just before the next roundabout. Go right at the roundabout (3rd exit and continue as the route from south below).
From the south leave the M5 at Junction 11A:Go straight on at the 1st round about. At the next roundabout go straight on, 2nd exit - This is where the directions from the north join.
At the next roundabout go straight on and past the 1st set of traffic lights and get in the outside lane ready to go right at the next traffic lights. Once you have turned follow this road to its end passing Horton Road yard on the right. At the end of the road turn right then first right again into the station.

Photographic notes
Good shots can be had from all parts of the station, but you will not be able to take shots of every train from one spot. The west end is good for terminating services from Wales, the east end for HST reversals.
Please do not try to gain access to the Costwold Rail areas without permission.
