Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk and is located on the Great Eastern Main Line. To the west of the station is a Freightliner stabling point.
Railway type and traffic
All passenger trains go to London (to the South) and to Norwich, Felixstowe, Lowestoft, Peterborough and Cambridge (to the North) All trains are operated by NX and Great Eastern. NX Anglia operating the express trains to London and NX Great Eastern operating the stopping service to London. On passenger duties: Class 90 with DBSO/DVT combinations, Class 150, Class 153, Class 170, for NX Anglia. Class 321, 360 for NX Great Eastern.

At Ipswich expect to see lots of freight running through the station and locos stabling in the yard, ready for their next duties. The locos you can expect to see at Ipswich are:
Freightliner Class 66, 86, 90.
DB Schenker 66.
D.R.S Class 20's.
Environment
Ipswich is a busy town and the station can be busy (especially at peak times) also on football days the station will be very busy as Ipswich Town FC stadium is just a short walk from the station. The station is staffed at all times.
Road directions
From the A12 Junction 14:
At the junction (You will see Toys R Us) continue into Ipswich on A1214, through 3 sets of traffic lights plus a pedestrian controlled set, to bottom of the hill. At traffic lights turn right and follow signs to station.

Parking
There is a short term car park outside the station where you can park for 20 minutes and there is also a multi-story car park there as well. The multi-story can get full very quickly, so you may have to park in the town and walk or get a bus to the station.
Public transport
From London Liverpool Street you can take any 'One' Anglia express train to Ipswich as they all stop there. Also you can take a 'One' Great Eastern train to Ipswich from Great Eastern stations. There are also services to Ipswich operated by 'One' Anglia from Peterborough, Felixstowe, Lowestoft, Cambridge and Peterborough.

Photographic notes
The best place to get pictures of the yard is Platform 4 which is dead opposite the yard, there is good light and most locos are visible and photable. You can also go to the end of Platform 3 (Norwich End) and see locos reversing at East Suffolk Junction as the locos sometimes come into the platform reverse and go back into the East Suffolk Junction yard. There are four tracks through the center of the platforms which due to the curve offer great opportunities for London bound trains passing through the station. At the south end of the platforms there are crossing warning lights that go out when a train is approaching. These are useful for advance warning of approaching trains.
Ipswich can be busy and noisy at times especially when the locos are firing up in the yard.
