New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
A station on the DC lines approximately half way between Harrow & Wealdstone and Watford Junction on the West Coast Main Line, with clear views of all the AC electrified lines (fast lines being closest to the platform).
Railway type and traffic
Standard West Coast Main Line traffic.
Virgin Trains Pendolinod, London Overground 378s, Southern Class 319/377. Regular DB Schenker freight, Freightliner traffic also busy, mostly Class 66s and 92s, but others have been known to turn up. Being the West Coast Main Line, Saturdays are poor for freight after about 0830 in the morning and on Sundays it often a case that the trains are not running at all!
Environment
Small town, generally friendly. Not recommended after dusk as there is nothing to light up the actual railway line!

Photographic notes
The best position to be in is at the southern end of the platform in line with a catenary mast (see pictures below which were taken from that position). First thing in the morning is a definite do not bother situtation for northbound trains as the sun will be directly behind them. Southbound trains are never backlit during the day, but after about 18:30, the sun tends to get a bit too far round. After 17:00 is best for northbound trains. It is really about 16-17:00 that the sun moves from being perfect for southbound to being perfect for northbound trains. Good for videos except if panning round as a catenary mast is very likely to get in the way. Be aware of the potential to be bowled by Class 313s/508s pulling out of the southbound platform as they take time to pass and will of course be right in the way.
In the current Summer 2004 timetable, southbound Silverlink trains are due at 11, 31 and 51 minutes past each hour.
