New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
Situated on the Edinburgh and Glasgow route about 25 minutes travelling time from Edinburgh. The station is situated just east of the junction where the Edinburgh - Glasgow via Falkirk High and the Edinburgh - Stirling via Falkirk Grahmston routes diverge.
Railway type and traffic
There are 6 passenger trains per hour in each direction. Four trains each hour from Edinburgh to Glasgow (and vice versa) and two trains an hour between Edinburgh and Dunblane (and vice versa). The xx00 and xx30 services between Edinburgh and Glasgow run non-stop through Polmont (although rush-hour stopping patterns are slightly different).

There's also the East Coast Highland Chieftan and the Caledonian Sleeper to/from Inverness.

Local railway station in rural(ish), no real problems noted but probably best avoided later on at night.
Road directions
From the M9 Junction 5:
Head south from the junction on to Salmon Inn Road and continue along this road till you reach the major junction. Here turn right onto Station Raod and the station is on you right.

Four trains an hour from Edinburgh Waverley taking about 25minutes, or two trains an hour from Glasgow Queen Street taking about 24minutes.

Photographic notes
There is a good view in both directions here. Looking east the track sweeps round in a curve to your left (when facing it) with a nice cant. To the west the line comes under a stone bridge before entering the station.
Non-stop trains heading to and from Glasgow are doing about 80mph in either direction - the line is quite fast here. MGRs will be accelerating through the station as they will have come from the Falkirk Grahmston direction where the line speed approaching the junction is a bit lower (about 40~50mph).

To get to the bridge:
Leave the station via the gate to the car park ( Edinburgh bound platform ) walk up the station drive , turn left and walk along to the stone overbridge at the west side of the station ( walking time 2 - 3 mins ). This bridge gives excellent views back onto the station as well as onto Polmont junction.

The line curving away to the left goes to glasgow via falkirk high , whereas the right hand line goes to falkirk grahamston
