New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
South Central London, around 2 miles from Victoria. In a complex area of track work near Stewarts Lane and in close proximity to many stations (Overground, Underground) and buses.
Railway type and traffic
Passenger:
Southern 456 regular, occasional 377 working on the Victoria - London Bridge. Parliamentary 377/4 service to and from Kensington Olympia once daily. Southeastern Class 465, 466, 375 and occasional 376. Class 508s have a regular ECS to Gillingham and back.
The majority of freight is runs between 10:00 - 15:00, but it certainly a 24 hour location.
DB Schenker 59 and 66, Hanson 59, Aggregate Industries 59, Occasional Saturdays Only (Q) Class 60, Freightliner Class 66, GBRf Class 73 or 66, Colas Class 47 and 56 (when operable) and regular DRS Class 37 on Dungeness workings.
It is also one of the few places in London you can still see a class 37/4 in regional rail colours... A mural on the station ramp!

Environment
The station seems to have a bad reputation. I have been at this station from morning until night, and despite a high urban population, I can report no crime problems, and I think it is a good and secure place to be. Any antisocial behaviour occurs across the road, and it is thus a safe station. It is in the inner suburbs of London, close to Clapham, Battersea, Vauxhall. But as with all locations remain vigilant at all times and keep your equipment safe.
The station is unstaffed and you do not need a ticket to get to the platforms.
Road directions
From Clapham Common where the A3 and A205 South Circular Road meet, take the A3220 towards Earls Court. Turn right at the first set of traffic lights into Lavender Hill and keep going straight until you get to the station.

Photographic notes
Stand on Platform 2 until 14:00, and Platform 1 after this. It will ensure the best cover from the light. Any view looking north will probably involve the famous Battersea Power Station.
Light is usually good; at any time of the day you can always find a good place to stand and photograph or video (Victoria end Platform 1 or 2, Denmark Hill end Platform 1 or 2, Footbridge looking NW / SE) A favourable location in the afternoons is the end of Platform 1, away from the Starter Signal. In the mornings, use the Intermediate part of the footbridge from Platform 2, as it gives an excellent angle.
Extra video notes
There is a scrap yard very close by which can be noisy at times.

The 'classic' view from the footbridge looking towards Battersea Power Station.
Stopping services to Victoria take the viaduct curving to the left. Just past the small brick building is another curve which is used by non passenger trains towards Clapham Junction and the West London Line.
